Yes, of course, set our minds on things above, we say.
But think about it...what do we typically set our minds on? What percentage of our mind time is focused on things above? Sadly, not nearly enough for me. Here is where my mind more often is:
Ahead - looking forward...to what I have to do, to what my dreams are, to what my big plans are for the next hour, day, week, month, year...
Behind - thinking about what might have been...what could have been. Wallowing in guilt or shame over mistakes in my past. Or on good days, thinking back fondly and missing the "good years."
Beside - wondering how I am stacking up to those beside me. Wishing for someone's glamorous life, or worse, patting myself on the back for not being "that kind of person."
Yes, we have goals and aspirations and dreams. God gives us inspiration and passions. Yes, we plan and prepare for what we need to get done. God calls us to be good stewards of what we have been entrusted with. Yes, we have fond memories of the past.
But we don't focus on these things -- good or bad. We put them in their proper viewing frame. What is in focus should be Jesus.
When our eyes are on Jesus, we don't get sidetracked by the things behind, next to, or in front of us. We focus on Him and know that it is all in His capable and loving hands.
God, help me quickly recognize when my eyes are shifting and help me to immediately turn them back to You.
